3. Scope of This Statement

This Accessibility Statement applies to the website and digital content owned and operated by Property Tax Advocates Inc., including:

  • Our primary website and all publicly available pages (home, services, blog, contact, etc.);
  • Lead forms, contact forms, newsletter signups, and client intake forms;
  • Downloadable documents and guides we provide directly on our website;
  • Email and electronic communications we send to users who have provided their contact information.

This statement does not apply to:

  • Third-party websites, services, or platforms that we link to but do not operate, such as county assessor portals, government databases, social media platforms, and external payment processors;
  • Content or applications embedded from third parties (e.g., maps, widgets, or videos) that we do not control or create;
  • User-generated content submitted by third parties that we do not produce or edit.

4. Our Commitment to Accessibility

We are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology, ability, or circumstance. We actively work to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and to adhere to many of the available standards and guidelines.

Our accessibility goals include:

  • Perceivability: Ensuring information and user interface components are presented in ways users can perceive, including text alternatives, captions, and adaptable layouts.
  • Operability: Making all functionality available from a keyboard, giving users enough time to read and use content, and avoiding design patterns that cause seizures or physical discomfort.
  • Understandability: Making text readable and understandable, ensuring forms and navigation behave predictably, and helping users avoid and correct mistakes.
  • Robustness: Maximizing compatibility with current and future assistive technologies, including screen readers, screen magnifiers, and voice-control software.

We view accessibility as an ongoing effort, not a one-time project. We routinely review our site, incorporate feedback, and update our practices to improve accessibility for all users.

5. Conformance Standards

We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines are the most widely recognized international standard for web accessibility and form the basis for many accessibility laws, including Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the United States.

Our conformance objectives include:

  • Meeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA success criteria across the site where technically feasible;
  • Applying Level AAA success criteria where they provide additional benefit and do not create an undue burden or conflict with the overall user experience;
  • Testing the site with automated accessibility tools and manual assistive-technology checks as part of our routine website updates;
  • Remediating accessibility issues that are reported to us in a timely manner and documenting known limitations where third-party technology prevents full conformance.

While we make every reasonable effort to achieve conformance, some third-party content or embedded tools may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We note those limitations in the “Known Limitations” section below and work to provide accessible alternatives when possible.

6. Accessibility Features

Our website includes a range of features designed to make it easier for users with disabilities to access and interact with our content. These features are built into the design and code of the site.

6.1 Keyboard Navigation

All interactive elements — including links, buttons, forms, navigation menus, and modals — can be operated using a keyboard alone. We provide visible focus indicators so users can always tell which element has focus. Keyboard navigation follows a logical order that matches the visual layout of the page.

6.2 Screen Reader Compatibility

We use semantic HTML, ARIA landmarks, and descriptive labels so that pages work well with screen readers and other assistive technologies. Headings are structured hierarchically, forms are associated with labels, and images that convey meaning include descriptive alternative text.

6.3 Color Contrast

We use color combinations that meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratios for normal and large text. We do not rely on color alone to convey important information; visual cues are supplemented with text, icons, or patterns.

6.4 Resizable Text and Zoom

Text can be resized up to 200% using browser zoom or operating system settings without losing content or functionality. We use relative units and responsive layouts so that content reflows correctly at different screen sizes and zoom levels.

6.5 Consistent Navigation

Navigation menus, links, and page layouts are consistent across the website. Users can predict where to find common elements, and the same terminology is used throughout the site.

6.6 Form Accessibility

Every form field has a visible label or accessible name. Required fields are clearly marked, and error messages are specific and easy to understand. Users receive confirmation after successfully submitting a form.

6.7 Skip Links

A “skip to main content” link is available for keyboard users to bypass repeated navigation and jump directly to the main content of each page.

7. Content and Design Practices

Beyond the technical features of the website, we follow content and design practices that improve readability and comprehension for all users.

  • Plain language: We write in clear, plain English and avoid unnecessary legal or technical jargon whenever possible. When specialized terms are required, we define them or link to a glossary.
  • Structured content: Pages use headings, lists, tables, and short paragraphs to make information easy to scan and understand.
  • Descriptive link text: Links use meaningful text that describes the destination, rather than generic phrases like “click here” or “read more.”
  • Accessible images: Decorative images are marked so screen readers can ignore them, while informative images include descriptive alt text.
  • Captions and transcripts: Any video or audio content we publish includes captions or transcripts to the extent feasible.
  • Consistent icons: Icons are paired with text labels or have accessible names so their meaning is clear to users who cannot see them.

8. Assistive Technologies We Support

We aim to support a broad range of assistive technologies. Our website is designed to work with the following tools and browser combinations:

  • Screen readers: NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), and TalkBack (Android).
  • Screen magnifiers: ZoomText, operating system magnification, and browser zoom.
  • Voice control: Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Apple Voice Control, and Windows Speech Recognition.
  • Keyboard-only navigation: Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, and arrow keys.
  • Modern browsers: Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, with assistive-technology support enabled.

If you use an assistive technology not listed here and experience difficulty, please contact us. We will work with you to understand the issue and find an accessible way to provide the information you need.

9. Known Limitations

Despite our best efforts, some areas of our website may not yet be fully accessible due to third-party tools, legacy content, or technical constraints. We document those limitations here and describe the alternatives we offer.

  • Third-party county and government links: Our website links to county assessor portals, Michigan Tax Tribunal resources, and other government websites. We do not control those sites and cannot guarantee their accessibility. If you need assistance accessing a public record, we can help you retrieve it or request it in an accessible format.
  • Third-party embedded content: Occasionally we may embed maps, videos, social media feeds, or widgets from third-party platforms. These embedded elements may not fully conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We choose accessible alternatives when available and provide transcripts or descriptions when possible.
  • PDF documents and older downloads: Some downloadable forms, guides, or archived blog documents may be provided as PDFs. We are progressively converting these to accessible HTML or tagged PDF formats. If you encounter an inaccessible PDF, please contact us and we will provide the content in an alternative format.
  • Browser and device variations: Accessibility support can vary across older browsers, outdated operating systems, or niche assistive technologies. We recommend using the latest version of a modern browser and assistive technology for the best experience.

We are committed to reducing these limitations over time. If you find an accessibility issue not listed here, please let us know so we can address it.

10. Feedback and Reporting Process

We welcome feedback from users, disability advocates, and assistive-technology experts. Your input helps us improve the accessibility of our website and services.

If you encounter an accessibility barrier, please tell us:

  • The page or feature you were trying to access;
  • The assistive technology or browser you were using (if applicable);
  • A description of the difficulty you experienced; and
  • Your preferred contact method so we can follow up with you.

You can submit feedback by emailing accessibility@propertytaxadvocates.com, calling (248) 607-0706, or using the contact form on our website. We aim to acknowledge accessibility feedback within two business days and to provide a meaningful response or workaround within ten business days.

11. Alternative Formats

We understand that some users may prefer or require information in a format different from what is offered on the website. Upon request, we will make reasonable efforts to provide content in an accessible alternative format, including:

  • Large-print documents or email summaries;
  • Screen-reader-friendly text versions of guides, forms, or blog articles;
  • Accessible PDFs or Microsoft Word documents;
  • Verbal explanations or phone consultations for users who have difficulty reading web content;
  • Plain-language summaries of complex legal or tax information.

To request an alternative format, please contact us at accessibility@propertytaxadvocates.com. We will work with you to identify the best format and deliver it as quickly as possible.

12. Physical Accessibility

In addition to digital accessibility, we strive to make in-person meetings and consultations accessible to clients and visitors with disabilities. Our office at 6775 Daly Rd, West Bloomfield, MI 48322 is wheelchair accessible and includes the following features:

  • Accessible parking spaces near the building entrance;
  • Step-free entry and accessible restroom facilities;
  • Seating and meeting spaces that accommodate mobility aids;
  • Service animals welcome.

If you require any specific accommodation for an in-person meeting — such as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, assistive listening device, or materials in large print — please let us know when scheduling your appointment. We will make every reasonable effort to arrange accommodations.

13. Ongoing Accessibility Efforts

Accessibility is a continuous priority. We regularly review our website and update our practices to improve accessibility. Our ongoing efforts include:

  • Automated testing: We run automated accessibility scans during development and before major updates to catch common issues such as missing alt text, low contrast, and missing form labels.
  • Manual testing: We perform keyboard-only navigation tests and screen-reader reviews on key pages and user flows.
  • Training: Staff and content contributors are encouraged to follow accessibility best practices when creating content, adding images, or building forms.
  • Feedback loop: We track accessibility feedback and prioritize fixes based on impact and feasibility.
  • Updates: We update this statement whenever there are significant changes to our website, services, or accessibility posture.

14. Changes to This Accessibility Statement

We encourage you to review this statement periodically to stay informed about our accessibility commitments.
